Sony's Disc-Free PlayStation Plan May End Bargain Used Game Market

Sony's decision to stop producing physical PlayStation discs by 2028 is expected to eliminate the market for used game discs, a historically cheaper alternative to digital downloads. This shift raises concerns among gamers about ownership and long-term access to their game libraries.

An analysis by Ars Technica examined the price differences between digital downloads and physical copies of 19 top-selling PlayStation games. While used discs generally offered lower prices throughout the year, the study found that Sony's frequent deep discounts on its PlayStation Store often made digital versions more affordable, a trend likely to continue post-disc.

The research analyzed pricing data from PlatPrices.com, focusing on both the standard and lowest discounted prices for games available on disc over the past year. The frequency of these discounts was also factored into the analysis to understand their impact on overall game affordability and accessibility.

While the elimination of physical discs removes a primary source of budget gaming, the increasing prevalence of digital sales suggests that the allure of low-priced games may persist through digital channels. However, the debate over true ownership versus licensing in a digital-only future remains a significant topic for consumers.
