Sophie Scholl and Hans Leipelt: White Rose resistance remembered

Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) is commemorating two resistance fighters, Sophie Scholl and Hans Leipelt, who would have turned 100 years old this year. Their resistance against the Nazi regime as part of the White Rose group and their subsequent execution continue to hold significant symbolic meaning.

Sophie Scholl and Hans Leipelt were central figures in the student resistance group known as the White Rose, which opposed the National Socialist government. The group's activities culminated in the distribution of leaflets. Both were arrested and executed by an unjust state. Their moral courage and defiance against Nazi tyranny are still remembered today through memorials located on the LMU campus.

A paved memorial in front of the main LMU building and a white rose in the university's atrium symbolize the legacy of the White Rose. Dr. Hildegard Kronawitter of the White Rose Foundation emphasizes how the courage and clear-sightedness of Scholl and Leipelt continue to leave a profound impression. Their lives and resistance have been widely documented in books and films, and their story is taught in schools.

However, Sophie Scholl's image has also been misused for political purposes, sparking outrage. Professor Markus Gloe from LMU notes that young people are searching for values and moral role models. According to Gloe, Scholl exemplifies the moral courage needed to foster critical thinking at universities and schools.

Hans Leipelt, who continued the work of the White Rose after the executions of Sophie and Hans Scholl and Christoph Probst, is not as widely known. Leipelt, originally a soldier who was discharged due to his Jewish mother, found purpose within the resistance movement and continued its efforts. His story highlights the continuity of resistance and individual responses to injustice.
