South Korean Banks Hit by Cyberattacks, President Orders Investigation
Several South Korean banks and financial institutions have experienced cyberattacks leading to personal data breaches. President Yoon Suk Yeol has ordered a thorough investigation and measures to prevent future incidents.
Multiple South Korean banks, including Shinhan Bank, KB Kookmin Bank, Hana Bank, and BNK Busan Bank, have been targeted in cyberattacks that have resulted in the exposure of customer personal information. Attacks have also affected savings banks and loan companies.
President Yoon Suk Yeol has instructed relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into these incidents and to implement effective countermeasures. The breaches have raised concerns about the security of the nation's financial systems.
An attack on Shinhan Bank's systems in late September may have compromised data for over 25,000 customers. KB Kookmin Bank reported a breach affecting its mobile support system for employees, impacting more than 100 customers. Hana Bank and BNK Busan Bank have also confirmed data leaks.
Financial regulators have convened emergency meetings with financial industry leaders to address the situation and bolster defenses against future threats. A nationwide review of IT systems within the financial sector has been initiated.
