South Korean Foreign Ministry's Training System Hacked
Hackers infiltrated South Korea's Foreign Ministry's online training system, leading to a leak of personal data for current and former employees.
Seoul, South Korea – South Korea's Foreign Ministry announced on July 20 that its Diplomatic Academy's online training system was compromised by hackers. The breach resulted in the leakage of personal information belonging to current and former ministry employees who served at headquarters or overseas missions between April 2025 and February 2026.
The compromised data includes training system IDs, names, email addresses, and encrypted passwords. However, the ministry stated that unique identification information, sensitive data, phone numbers, home addresses, and photographs were not affected by the breach.
The ministry reported that the intrusion exploited a security vulnerability within the system. While crucial sensitive data is reported to be secure, a breach in such a critical government system raises concerns regarding national security.
This incident underscores the vulnerabilities in digital systems, even within key governmental bodies, and highlights the ongoing challenges in maintaining cybersecurity for sensitive institutions.
