Southwest Airlines Overhauls Loyalty Program with Unlimited Companion Pass

Southwest Airlines has introduced a major overhaul of its Rapid Rewards loyalty program, highlighted by a new top-tier Platinum status that grants members unlimited Companion Pass privileges. This allows a designated companion to travel for free on any flight taken by the elite member, excluding taxes and fees.

The changes are part of Southwest's broader strategy to evolve beyond its low-cost carrier identity and better compete with major airlines like United, Delta, and American Airlines. The airline aims to offer more comprehensive benefits to its frequent flyers.

Alongside the Platinum tier, the program introduces Gold and Silver statuses, replacing the previous A-List and A-List Preferred tiers. Additionally, new Milestone Rewards will allow customers to earn up to three Companion Pass trips as they progress toward higher status levels throughout the year.

Southwest is also expanding redemption options for its Rapid Rewards points. Starting in Spring 2025, members can use points for international travel with partners Icelandair, China Airlines, and Etihad Airways. Later in 2024, points will be redeemable for rental cars, and by early 2027, for specific seat upgrades on Southwest flights, such as those with extra legroom.

Furthermore, Southwest plans to equip its entire fleet with Starlink satellite internet by Fall 2027, offering high-speed Wi-Fi at no charge to Rapid Rewards members through a T-Mobile partnership. This move aims to enhance the onboard experience for all passengers.
