S&P 500 index stagnant despite sectoral growth in October

The S&P 500 index has traded sideways for five months, leaving investors with little progress despite high market volatility. The index concluded Friday at 7,580.07, nearly identical to its May 29 close of 7,580.06. Throughout this period, the index fluctuated significantly, hitting a low of 7,266 in June and peaking at 7,818 in early October.

While the market-cap weighted index has stalled, the equal-weight S&P 500 has risen 4.5 percent over the same five-month stretch. This divergence challenges the notion that sector rotation, a key trend earlier this year, has lost momentum. The equal-weight index continues to outperform its market-cap counterpart.

Friday’s 1.8 percent decline—the index's worst performance since June—wiped out October's earlier gains. With the S&P 500 finishing the month down 0.9 percent, market participants are now evaluating whether the disparity between weighted indices will persist as economic conditions evolve.
