SpaceX announces plans for major mobile carrier expansion
SpaceX aims to launch Starlink Mobile as a primary carrier, utilizing a combination of satellite infrastructure and a new 5G ground network.

SpaceX has announced plans to transition its Starlink service into a major mobile carrier, targeting direct competition with established telecommunications companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The company intends to leverage its existing satellite network alongside a newly developed 5G ground infrastructure to provide mobile coverage.
To facilitate this, SpaceX has partnered with Qualcomm to deploy cellular technology across tens of thousands of 5G sites, with implementation scheduled to begin in 2027. Additionally, reports indicate that SpaceX is in discussions to acquire Boost Mobile as a potential entry point into the retail consumer market. Further reports suggest the company may seek to utilize approximately 80,000 cell sites across the United States to anchor its network operations.
Industry analysts note that while the move is significant, the barriers to entry remain high. Tim Höttges, CEO of T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom, has acknowledged the seriousness of the company’s intent, though he estimated that the capital expenditure required to fully realize such a network could exceed $200 billion.
SpaceX currently operates thousands of direct-to-cell satellites. The successful scaling of its terrestrial network remains the company's primary hurdle in securing a foothold in the competitive US mobile market.
