SpaceX Calls for Better Orbital Coordination After Starlink Near-Misses

SpaceX, a prominent player in the aerospace industry, has voiced concerns over the increasing collision risks in Earth's orbit. The company argues that enhanced coordination and information exchange among satellite operators are crucial to prevent the numerous near-miss incidents involving its Starlink satellites.

Speaking on Monday at the International Astronautical Congress in Turkey, Michael Nicolls, SpaceX's vice president for Starlink, highlighted the necessity for improved real-time data on satellite positions and trajectories. Such information is vital for the navigation and safety of other space actors, including national space agencies and commercial enterprises.

SpaceX operates the Starlink constellation, which now comprises over 11,000 satellites. This represents approximately two-thirds of all active spacecraft in low-Earth orbit. The growing number of satellites and existing space debris amplify the potential for collisions.

Nicolls emphasized that maintaining the long-term usability of space requires all operators to commit to transparency and data sharing. SpaceX affirms its commitment to sharing its data and calls for reciprocal action from other entities.
