SpaceX Delivers Lab-Grown Brain Cells and Heart Tissue to Space Station

A SpaceX Dragon spacecraft arrived at the International Space Station this week carrying over 6,300 pounds of supplies, food, and equipment for astronauts. The mission marks SpaceX's 35th commercial resupply flight for NASA. In addition to standard provisions, the payload included materials for several scientific experiments, such as artificial retinas, three-dimensional heart tissue, and lab-grown brain cell clusters.

One experiment, LambdaVision-1, is testing the effectiveness of manufacturing protein-based artificial retinas in microgravity. NASA anticipates that retinas produced in space could lead to improved implant performance and potentially restore vision for patients with currently untreatable retinal diseases like age-related macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa.

Another study, Stellar Spheroids, will investigate how microgravity affects three-dimensional human heart tissue. The findings are expected to aid researchers in developing more realistic disease models and supporting larger-scale drug testing for future space missions.

The spacecraft also carried the Microgravity Integrated Neuro Disease Screening (MINDS) experiment, which utilizes brain organoids, or lab-grown brain cell clusters. These organoids are intended to help researchers study inflammation associated with neurodegenerative diseases. Scientists hope this work will contribute to the development of therapies for conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
