SpaceX in talks to acquire Boost Mobile for wireless expansion

SpaceX is reportedly negotiating a deal with EchoStar to acquire Boost Mobile as part of a strategy to compete with major U.S. wireless carriers.

2 November 2026

SpaceX is currently in discussions with EchoStar regarding the potential acquisition of the wireless carrier Boost Mobile. The deal aims to accelerate SpaceX’s development of a hybrid satellite-ground mobile network, intended to compete directly with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile.

By potentially absorbing Boost Mobile, which serves over seven million customers, SpaceX would secure an immediate user base and established distribution channels. The initiative follows a recent $8 billion spectrum deal by the company, signaling an aggressive push into the telecommunications sector. Reports indicate that CEO Elon Musk has held direct meetings with EchoStar chairman Charlie Ergen to move the proposal forward.

Industry analysts warn that significant regulatory and operational hurdles remain. Boost Mobile’s current operations rely on network rental agreements with AT&T and T-Mobile, which would require explicit consent for any transfer. Furthermore, experts suggest that building the necessary infrastructure, customer support, and marketing capability to challenge industry incumbents will involve substantial and sustained capital investment.
