SpaceX in talks to acquire Boost Mobile to bypass telecom barriers

SpaceX is engaged in talks with EchoStar regarding the potential acquisition or network partnership with Boost Mobile. By targeting the carrier, which operates on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks, Elon Musk’s company seeks to circumvent the barriers that have prevented Starlink from securing wholesale access from major U.S. wireless providers.

This development follows SpaceX’s $8 billion investment in low-band cellular spectrum licenses, aimed at enabling Starlink Mobile to provide reliable indoor coverage. For SpaceX, securing access to Boost Mobile’s infrastructure would provide a shortcut to the consumer market, potentially accelerating the rollout of its terrestrial mobile service.

Incumbent carriers remain skeptical of the timeline for such a disruption. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman stated that while the company takes the competitive threat seriously, building a fully competitive national terrestrial network would require years of development and significant capital expenditure. Despite the technical hurdles, investors have signaled optimism, with shares of both SpaceX and EchoStar trending upward following the reports.
