SpaceX Plans Orbital AI Data Centers, Raising E-Waste Concerns
SpaceX has proposed a plan to deploy a massive constellation of satellites in Earth's orbit to serve as AI data centers. The project raises concerns about increasing space debris and the loss of valuable materials.

SpaceX, the company founded by Elon Musk, has outlined plans for a vast satellite constellation intended to function as artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in Earth's orbit. This initiative could establish a new category of unsustainable waste by exporting valuable materials beyond the planet, rather than engaging in terrestrial recycling.
Current satellite networks, such as SpaceX's own Starlink, have already doubled the mass of objects in low Earth orbit. The proposed data center constellation would significantly exceed this scale and might involve pushing some satellites into distant orbits, effectively removing them from any material lifecycle.
SpaceX estimates that approximately 200,000 of the proposed one million AI satellites would be decommissioned annually, assuming a five-year operational lifespan. According to an FCC filing, around 40,000 of these would deorbit and burn up in the atmosphere. The remaining 160,000 would likely be moved to a remote "disposal" orbit, rendering them inaccessible for future use.
The proposal prompts significant questions regarding the management of space debris and the sustainable use of resources. The atmospheric dispersal of materials from burning satellites, such as aluminum, and their long-term impact on the ozone layer remain areas requiring further investigation.
