SpaceX Plans World's Largest Rocket Launch Site in Louisiana with $100 Billion Investment
SpaceX has unveiled plans for a massive spaceport in Louisiana, with an estimated investment of $100 billion. The facility is intended for thousands of annual Starship rocket launches.

SpaceX announced plans on Tuesday to construct a large spaceport in Louisiana, representing an investment of up to $100 billion. The company aims to conduct thousands of annual launches of its Starship rocket from the new site.
The proposed spaceport, to be named "Starbase Louisiana," is slated for development near Vermilion Parish along the southern Louisiana coast. Construction is expected to commence before the end of next year, with the earliest potential launch date set for 2029. If realized, this project could significantly reshape SpaceX's operations and the U.S. rocket industry, as Louisiana has no prior history of orbital-class rocket launches.
The Louisiana facility will primarily focus on commercial and operational Starship launches once the rocket demonstrates its capability for safe orbital delivery. SpaceX also intends for all Starship components, including upper stages that have not yet been successfully recovered, to be landed and reused, aiming to accelerate launch cadences and reduce costs. This will necessitate the construction of towers potentially hundreds of feet tall to catch returning rocket stages.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated that Starbase Louisiana would eventually feature over 12 launch towers, enabling more than 30 Starship launches per day, positioning it as the largest launch site globally. According to the company, the facility will be a "self-sufficient spaceport" equipped with propellant production, power generation, deep-water access, and potentially an airport.
However, the project faces considerable hurdles. Starship is not yet fully operational, with its first orbital test flight anticipated no earlier than September. Several critical technical challenges, such as the landing and reuse of upper stages, remain to be resolved. Such large-scale projects are also subject to extensive regulatory and environmental reviews, which can span many years, as seen with SpaceX's Texas facilities. The company has indicated plans to conserve and restore significant portions of the land.
