Most artificial intelligence projects fail due to an incorrect approach, according to technology analyst Soren Kaplan. The five-step "Algorithm" employed by SpaceX, particularly in the development of its Raptor 3 engine, offers a blueprint for success.

The process, detailed in an Andreessen Horowitz profile of SpaceX, involves five sequential steps: 1. Question every requirement. 2. Delete any unnecessary part or process. 3. Simplify and optimize. 4. Accelerate cycle time. 5. Automate.

Tim Berry, who spent a decade leading the production of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy upper stages, described the process as deeply ingrained. The Raptor 3 engine, boasting increased thrust and integrated plumbing through 3D printing, serves as tangible proof of the algorithm's effectiveness.

Kaplan suggests the critical flaw in many AI initiatives is attempting automation too early, before questioning requirements and eliminating redundancies. Elon Musk reportedly admitted that excessive automation made Tesla's factories inefficient, overestimating robots and underestimating human input.

Research from MIT's NANDA project indicated that 95% of organizations deploying generative AI saw no measurable return, with the failure rarely stemming from the AI model itself but rather from process deficiencies.
