SpaceX reveals plans for massive Texas chip factory
SpaceX has unveiled plans for its Terafab advanced chip factory in Grimes County, Texas. The facility is projected to be the world's largest and most valuable building, focusing on semiconductor production.
SpaceX revealed details on Thursday about its ambitious Terafab project, a massive advanced chip factory planned for Grimes County, Texas, approximately 45 miles northwest of Houston. The company released a video rendering of the facility, which it claims will be the largest and most valuable building on Earth.
The projected scale of Terafab is 100 million square feet, dwarfing existing mega-factories like Tesla's Gigafactory Texas and Apple Park. According to SpaceX, the vertically integrated facility will handle the manufacturing, packaging, and testing of advanced logic and memory chips. These chips are intended for use in Tesla's Optimus robots and self-driving Cybercabs, as well as for SpaceX's space-based data centers.
The project comes with significant financial and logistical considerations. SpaceX has secured a 100% tax abatement from Grimes County, contingent on substantial investment by 2030 and job creation by 2035. The estimated cost has fluctuated, with initial figures ranging from $25 billion to $55 billion, and later filings suggesting a phased construction plan potentially reaching $119 billion.
To power the extensive operations, SpaceX plans to construct its own natural gas power plants and large battery arrays, notably excluding solar power despite Tesla's involvement in solar manufacturing. The company has committed to hiring at least 3,000 local workers. The Terafab project aims to address future compute demand while potentially facing scrutiny over its scale, cost, and environmental impact.
