SpaceX seeks to utilize 80,000 cell sites to expand mobile network reach

SpaceX has initiated discussions with tower operator Crown Castle to lease space on approximately 80,000 cell sites, according to reports. The arrangement would allow the company to utilize nearly half of the 158,500 operational towers in the United States, signaling a significant move toward establishing a broader ground-based infrastructure for its communications business.

This infrastructure expansion aims to position SpaceX as a direct competitor to incumbent mobile network operators, including Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T. While SpaceX is primarily known for its Starlink satellite constellation, integrating physical tower assets could enhance the terrestrial capabilities of its network.

During a recent earnings call, Crown Castle CEO Chris Hillabrant declined to confirm specific customer agreements, citing confidentiality. The potential partnership highlights the increasing convergence between satellite-based telecommunications and traditional cellular network infrastructure.
