SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit, Deploys New Starlink Satellites
SpaceX successfully completed the 14th test flight of its Starship rocket, reaching low-Earth orbit and deploying new generation Starlink satellites for the first time.
SpaceX achieved a major milestone on Monday with the 14th test flight of its Starship rocket, successfully reaching low-Earth orbit from South Texas. Previous flights intentionally limited the rocket's full capability to follow suborbital trajectories. This time, however, the rocket's Raptor engines generated enough thrust to accelerate to orbital velocity.
During the mission, 26 of the company's newest generation of Starlink broadband satellites were deployed from the rocket's payload bay. These satellites, larger than what SpaceX's workhorse Falcon 9 rocket can carry, were ejected using a specialized system.
Reaching orbit marks a significant advancement for the Starship program, which aims to enable deep space travel and cargo transport. Previous test flights focused on verifying the functionality of various rocket components on suborbital paths.
SpaceX continues to test and develop Starship with the goal of future crewed missions to the Moon and Mars. This successful orbital insertion demonstrates the vehicle's capability for carrying larger payloads and achieving orbital speeds.
