SpaceX Starship Reaches Orbit for First Time, Returns Early
SpaceX successfully launched its Starship rocket into orbit for the first time on Monday. The flight was cut short for safety reasons, with the spacecraft splashing down in the Pacific Ocean three hours after liftoff.
SpaceX achieved a significant milestone on Monday, successfully sending its Starship rocket into Earth's orbit for the first time. The launch from Texas proceeded as planned, and the 26 new Starlink satellites aboard were also deployed.
The mission was originally intended to last ten hours, completing six orbits around the Earth as part of preparations for NASA's Artemis moon program. However, the flight was terminated early due to safety considerations. The spacecraft reentered the atmosphere over the Pacific and splashed down approximately three hours after liftoff.
The spacecraft's splashdown in the Pacific Ocean was dramatic, with Starship tipping over and catching fire before impacting the water. One of the rocket's engines also shut down prematurely, but flight controllers opted to proceed with the mission after an otherwise successful initial phase.
SpaceX aims for Starship to be fully reusable, a key factor in reducing launch costs. The company is gathering data from the flight to improve future launches and its readiness for NASA's lunar program. New launch sites are also under construction in Florida and Louisiana.
