Shortly after the separation of the rocket's upper stage, one of its six Raptor engines shut down. Although the rocket could theoretically reach orbit without the engine, SpaceX initially considered aborting the mission before deciding to proceed minutes later.
Achieving orbit is a critical milestone that could allow SpaceX to begin regular commercial flights with Starship. It also moves the company closer to its goal of making the rocket fully reusable.
According to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Starship plays a central role in the company's future plans, including NASA's moon missions and the deployment of data centers into orbit. The original plan involved the Starship upper stage orbiting Earth six times over nine hours while deploying 26 new Starlink satellites.
