SpaceX to Acquire Cursor for $60B, AI Coding Startups Under Watch
SpaceX announced its agreement to acquire AI coding platform Cursor for $60 billion in an all-stock deal. The acquisition highlights emerging startups focused on AI-driven software development tools.

SpaceX has agreed to acquire Cursor, a company specializing in AI coding tools, in an all-stock transaction valued at $60 billion. The deal is anticipated to close in the third quarter and brings significant attention to the burgeoning field of AI for software development.
The acquisition shines a spotlight on early-stage startups building the infrastructure and agents behind AI-generated software. Among these are Cline, an open-source coding assistant that raised $27 million in Series A funding last July, and E2B, which provides sandboxed environments for AI-generated code and closed a $21 million Series A round in the same month. Additionally, OpenHands, a cloud-based coding agent platform, secured $18.8 million in funding in November.
Beyond startup consolidation, the Cursor acquisition could significantly impact the competitive landscape for AI model performance, particularly for SpaceX and its AI initiative xAI in their race against competitors like Google. While Cursor represents a major development, the next wave of AI coding is coalescing around the tools, infrastructure, and agents that enable AI systems to write and execute software.
