SpaceX to Use Tesla Cybertrucks as NASA Launch Emergency Vehicles

SpaceX is set to replace NASA's traditional military-grade emergency escape vehicles with Tesla Cybertrucks at crewed launch sites. The electric pickup trucks will serve as backup vehicles to ensure rapid evacuation of personnel in the event of an emergency during launches.

Previously, NASA relied on Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) military vehicles for this critical safety function. However, for an upcoming launch to the International Space Station, facilitated by SpaceX, the agency will utilize Cybertrucks. This transition allows the MRAP vehicles to be repurposed for other duties.

NASA officials stated that the decision to use Cybertrucks was made by SpaceX, not NASA. The space agency indicated that commercial crew providers are encouraged to introduce alternatives to MRAP vehicles that meet NASA's safety requirements. Both SpaceX and NASA have assessed the Cybertruck's capabilities and found it suitable for emergency situations.

This development follows SpaceX's established practice of using Teslas, including transporting astronaut crews prior to liftoff. The move also comes after Tesla reportedly sold over $100 million worth of Cybertrucks to SpaceX. Elon Musk leads both companies.
