SpaceXAI Open Sources Grok After Privacy Backlash
Elon Musk's SpaceXAI announced it will open-source Grok Build, its AI coding assistant, following significant privacy concerns raised by developers.

SpaceXAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, has announced that its AI coding assistant, Grok Build, will become open source. This decision comes after software developers raised serious privacy concerns regarding the extent of data collected by the tool.
The core issue involved Grok Build sending entire folders of private code to its servers without clear user indication. While AI models typically require data transmission for processing, the scope of Grok Build's data collection was flagged as excessive and potentially privacy-invasive.
Initially, SpaceXAI implemented a quiet fix and reminded users of opt-out options for data retention. However, this response failed to satisfy developers who called for greater transparency and accountability from the company.
Akshey Deokule, a member of technical staff at SpaceXAI, stated on X that the company has heard the feedback. Consequently, data retention will now be opt-out by default for all users, and all previously retained code will be deleted.
By making Grok Build open source, the company allows developers to independently audit the code, enhancing transparency and trust. This move provides a level of scrutiny that was previously difficult to achieve without specialized external tools.
