SpaceXAI's Grok AI tool uploaded user codebases to cloud
SpaceXAI's Grok Build AI coding tool was observed uploading users' entire codebases to Google Cloud before the functionality was reported and disabled. Researchers at Cereblab published findings on the data upload.

SpaceXAI's Grok Build AI coding tool was reportedly uploading entire user codebases to Google Cloud before the functionality was disabled, according to findings published on Monday by researchers at Cereblab.
The research indicated that the Grok Build CLI was packaging and transferring full code repositories, including files it was instructed not to access and secrets removed from version history. This data retention was more extensive than that of similar tools like Claude Code.
As of Monday, tests showed SpaceXAI's servers returning a "disable_codebase_upload: true" flag, stopping the codebase uploads. SpaceXAI has not issued a public statement regarding the incident, though Elon Musk has reportedly responded.
The incident highlights concerns about data privacy and security in AI development tools, particularly when handling sensitive source code that may contain proprietary information or credentials.
