SpaceXAI's Grok Builds Faces Trust Issues After Privacy Concerns

Software developers have expressed anger and concern this week after discovering that Elon Musk's SpaceXAI's Grok Builds code assistant may have uploaded private code repositories to servers without consent. The issue reportedly affected users who had opted out of data sharing in their privacy settings. Initially, SpaceXAI appeared to quietly fix the feature, but following backlash from developers, the company highlighted a privacy command that promises to retroactively delete any stored data.

The incident has raised significant privacy issues, particularly for developers working on confidential projects who expect their privacy settings to be respected. While there is no indication that sensitive data has been stolen, accidental data sharing via the cloud could expose users to vulnerabilities.

Developer Gergely Orosz described the incident as "a terrible incident" and questioned the usability of Grok CLI for businesses based on it. The first to raise the alarm was Tinh Dang, a 38-year-old software developer from Vietnam with over 15 years of experience, who expressed surprise at SpaceXAI's handling of the situation.

SpaceXAI has not responded to a request for comment. However, the company's actions have damaged developers' trust in the Grok Builds tool, and discussions about data privacy in technology products continue.
