SpaceX's weighting within the Nasdaq 100 index is scheduled for an upward adjustment later this month. This change is anticipated to prompt passive funds tracking the index to execute billions of dollars in purchases.

According to preliminary estimates from Nasdaq Global Index Watch, SpaceX's weight is projected to rise from approximately 1.28% to 2.82%. The final weighting will be officially confirmed later in the month. Wall Street institutions predict that index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that follow the index will consequently increase their holdings significantly.

SpaceX's previously lower weighting stemmed from its inclusion in the index in July. At that time, a substantial portion of the company's shares were still subject to lock-up periods, restricting public trading. Even after Nasdaq revised its rules to allow earlier inclusion of large-cap companies and removed the hard requirement of at least 10% freely tradable shares, SpaceX's weighting remained constrained.

As lock-up periods expire, more SpaceX shares will become available for trading. This increases the company's free float, thereby boosting its weight in the Nasdaq 100 index. Further adjustments to its index weighting may occur in the future as additional shares are released.

The constituents of the Nasdaq 100 index comprise the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. There is no minimum market capitalization threshold for inclusion, but companies must meet daily average trading volume requirements and other criteria.
