Sparkassen banks reach one million Wero activations
The Sparkassen financial group has surpassed one million activations of its Wero mobile payment solution, a year after its market launch. This milestone is seen as crucial for establishing a European alternative in payments.

Germany's Sparkassen financial group announced that its Wero mobile payment solution has exceeded one million activations, marking a significant milestone one year after its market introduction. The company positions Wero as a foundational step towards an independent European payment system.
Dr. Joachim Schmalzl, a board member at the German Savings Banks Association (DSGV), stated that Wero's growth is organically driven by customer trust and the solution's everyday usability. He highlighted the million activations as proof that Europe can compete in the payment sector.
The group is now focusing on the next development phase: piloting Wero for online payments within the current year. The objective is to establish Wero as a user-friendly and European payment solution for e-commerce.
Wero is integrated into the "Sparkasse" app, allowing for real-time money transfers using a mobile number or email address, without requiring an IBAN. The service also supports cross-border payments and is expanding to include more banks and countries, with future plans for in-store retail payments.
