SPD Politician Robin Mesarosch Highlights TikTok Manipulation Concerns

Berlin – German Social Democrat (SPD) politician Robin Mesarosch has drawn attention for his warnings regarding manipulative tactics on the TikTok platform. Mesarosch, a 33-year-old member of the Bundestag, expressed frustration over how the platform is used to promote political influence, calling it dangerous.

Mesarosch contends that certain groups are effectively utilizing the platform to spread political disinformation, emphasizing the need to counteract this trend. In a recent TikTok video, he stated, “Yesterday’s election results were crap,” referencing the challenge of engaging young voters on social media.

With a background in poetry slams, Mesarosch is himself active on social media, sharing videos where he comments on current political issues. He has gained a significant following on both Instagram and TikTok, believing that authenticity and emotion are key to achieving political resonance with younger generations.

"I don't try to be the explainer in the Bundestag. I just do what I believe in," Mesarosch told the press. He also finds the lack of emotion in politics detrimental, referencing Chancellor Olaf Scholz's style. However, Mesarosch distinguishes between genuine political emotional engagement and the populist, often racist, emotionalism employed by the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party, which he deems dangerous.

He stresses that politicians must show emotion and passion for their work, viewing this not as a tactic but as authenticity. Mesarosch further asserts that politics must differentiate itself from traditional advertising because it deals with real, human-affecting issues, a significant advantage that politicians should leverage.
