Spill Social Platform Aims for Community Safety and Equity
Spill, a social media platform founded by former Twitter executive Alphonzo Terrell, has achieved positive cash flow and is growing rapidly. The app focuses on creating a safer space for Black and queer communities, offering features like niche sub-communities and AI moderation.

Alphonzo Terrell, who previously led global social and editorial at Twitter, has launched Spill, a social media platform designed to foster equity and safety for Black and queer communities. The company announced it has reached positive cash flow and is on track to more than double its signups and revenue year-over-year.
Spill differentiates itself by focusing on serving marginalized communities often exposed to harmful content on larger platforms. Its features include dedicated sub-communities for various interests, such as "Foodie Spill" and "Art Spill," and a card game popular within the Black community, Spades. The platform utilizes an AI moderation tool that the company states has a 90% success rate.
Further enhancing community involvement, Spill conducted a user investment round last year, allowing users to become shareholders. The platform has secured brand partnerships with companies including Netflix and Gilead. Terrell describes Spill not as a replacement for "Black Twitter," but as an "operating system for fandom," emphasizing a space for genuine belonging and niche interests.
Terrell highlighted Spill's ability to provide brands with unique first-party data and insights into community sentiments, helping them make better decisions and avoid costly missteps. He stressed the importance of maintaining user trust, stating that sacrificing long-term credibility for short-term gain is detrimental to the business model. Spill plans to participate in Fast Company's Innovation Festival in September to discuss community-centric business strategies.
