Sports Medicine Society Emphasizes Role in Anti-Doping Efforts

At its 24th annual congress in Munich, the German Society for Orthopedic and Traumatological Sports Medicine (GOTS) underscored the critical role of sports medicine in combating doping. The society reiterated the primary responsibilities of sports physicians in safeguarding athlete health and ensuring fair play in competitions.

The misuse of drugs and medical methods for performance enhancement in competitive sports, as well as for unnatural muscle development in recreational activities, is more widespread than positive doping tests suggest. Investigations and enforcement actions have revealed the extent of such practices, which pose serious health risks to athletes, including sudden cardiac events and thromboembolic diseases.

In response, the Central Ethics Commission of the German Medical Association has developed recommendations for physicians dealing with doping practices. The German Olympic Sports Confederation's (DOSB) medical expert commission has also clearly positioned itself and outlined requirements for sports physicians. These include knowledge of anti-doping rules, support for preventive measures, and educating athletes on the health risks associated with doping and supplements.

GOTS, which has consistently opposed all forms of doping, actively supports the anti-doping fight. The society collaborates with professional associations on training initiatives and emphasizes the importance of sports physicians prioritizing athlete well-being and maintaining critical distance to avoid exploitation. Sports physicians should not be dependent on or financially linked to athlete success.

Beyond its annual congress, GOTS also hosted a symposium in Berlin in August 2009 focusing on athletics as a high-performance sport from a medical perspective. This event is part of the society's broader commitment to promoting athlete welfare and safety.
