Square Integrates Restaurants with ChatGPT and Claude for Ordering

Payment processing company Square has introduced a new integration that enables restaurants to accept orders placed directly through ChatGPT and Claude AI platforms. This feature allows consumers to discover restaurants and place orders within these AI services without incurring additional marketplace commissions.

Square will process these AI-driven transactions without charging the traditional marketplace commission fees that have historically impacted the food service industry. Standard online ordering fees, such as 3.3% + $0.30 or 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction, will still apply for merchants on certain Square plans.

The system pulls data directly from Square's live catalog, dynamically updating product information, pricing, modifiers, and stock availability in real time. This ensures AI agents do not display out-of-stock items. Restaurant operators can test and verify functionality directly within ChatGPT or via Claude extensions. Customers can complete their purchase within the chat interface or be seamlessly redirected to the restaurant's standard online ordering page with their selections pre-populated.

This new solution aims to provide restaurants with a more cost-effective method for receiving online and AI-generated orders. The high commission fees charged by third-party ordering and delivery apps, which can reach up to 30% of the order value, have created significant financial pressure on the restaurant industry. Square's integration offers an alternative that reduces these costs and helps restaurants better protect their profit margins.
