Steel producer SSAB, railcar manufacturer The Greenbrier Companies, and metal recycler Alter Trading Corporation showcased a collaborative circular steel system at SSAB's Iowa facility yesterday. The event drew approximately 70 community leaders, elected officials, higher education representatives, and industry stakeholders.

The demonstration featured a railcar constructed from SSAB Zero™ steel, which was then loaded with recycled metal. This setup highlighted the synergy between recycling, manufacturing, and steelmaking in supporting a more sustainable industrial model. SSAB Zero™ is a low-emission steel produced with minimal fossil fuel use and made entirely from recycled steel.

SSAB aims to significantly reduce its carbon emissions from steel production in the coming years. The company is developing new steel grades and manufacturing processes to enable the production of low-carbon steel. Greenbrier manufactures railcars, and Alter handles metal recycling, together forming a value chain that supports circular economy principles.

The Iowa event served as an example of how different industrial players can collaborate to advance the sector's transition towards a low-carbon, circular economy. SSAB stated that such collaborative projects are crucial for the industry's future.
