SSAB Transports Steel Nearly Emission-Free to Sweden Using Biogas
Steel company SSAB has begun transporting steel coils from Finland to Sweden using biogas and electric power. The initiative significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions from transport.
Steel manufacturer SSAB has initiated a new logistics solution for transporting steel coils from Finland to Sweden with near-zero emissions. In collaboration with Ahola Transport and Viking Line, SSAB is utilizing biogas and electricity across various stages of the transport chain.
The process begins in Hämeenlinna, Finland, where steel is moved by Ahola Transport's biogas and electric trucks to the Port of Turku. From there, Viking Line's vessels, Viking Grace and Viking Glory, carry the cargo to Stockholm, Sweden, before trucks complete the delivery to customers. This route represents the first green freight corridor fully powered by biogas.
SSAB aims to substantially reduce its logistics-related emissions. The company committed in 2021 at the UN Climate Change Conference to contract zero-emission medium and heavy-duty trucking services by 2030. Approximately 160 tons of steel now travel weekly via this emission-free route.
Partner companies Ahola Transport and Viking Line have invested in low-emission solutions. Ahola Transport has experience with gas-powered vehicles, and Viking Line's ferries can utilize liquefied biogas as fuel. While the current supply of low-emission transport options is limited, customer interest in these services is growing.
