St. Lucie County declines to investigate origin of unauthorized Flock cameras

St. Lucie County officials have confirmed they will not conduct an investigation into the ownership of 12 unpermitted Flock Safety cameras discovered during a recent removal operation. The cameras, which triggered public concern regarding data privacy, have been removed and their origins remain unverified.

Five of the cameras were ultimately linked to local law enforcement agencies in Port St. Lucie and Fort Pierce. These agencies reportedly operated under incorrect guidance, which suggested that multiple cameras could be installed under a single permit. This contradicted local regulations requiring individual permits for every device deployed.

Residents have expressed frustration over the lack of clarity regarding who managed the cameras and how personal data was stored or accessed. While Flock Safety has acknowledged that the guidance regarding permits originated from police departments, the company has not identified the individuals responsible. The incident underscores ongoing debates regarding the oversight of automated license plate recognition and surveillance technology by local government.
