Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden cancels exhibition on colonial history

Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) has cancelled its scheduled exhibition, "The Year 1983," which was intended to examine the colonial and post-colonial ties between Germany—specifically the former East Germany—and Namibia. The decision follows tensions regarding social media comments made by the curator, Zoé Samudzi, as well as unresolved disputes over the exhibition's conceptual approach.

The project was set to feature installations by Namibian artist Tuli Mekondjo, which aimed to juxtapose colonial-era military uniforms with those worn by SWAPO fighters, alongside a reconstruction of the Shark Island concentration camp by Forensic Architecture. This research-heavy exhibit intended to highlight the realities of the genocide against the Herero and Nama people, exploring the complexities of German historical responsibility.

The cancellation reflects an intensifying national debate over post-colonial studies in Germany. Observers note that the current political environment has made it increasingly difficult for cultural institutions to address colonial violence and historical guilt, as projects are frequently scrutinized through the lens of contemporary geopolitical controversies.
