PALO ALTO, Calif. – Stanford Medicine Children's Health has significantly expanded its pediatric robotic surgery program at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford. The enhanced capabilities allow for the provision of minimally invasive, precision-enhancing robotic-assisted surgeries for young patients.
The program aims to improve surgical accuracy and reduce recovery times across specialties including pediatric urology, gynecology, and bariatric surgery. The robotic technology facilitates smaller incisions and less tissue disruption, leading to faster and smoother recovery for children.
The program is led by several experienced surgeons dedicated to leveraging robotic technology. Dr. Karthik Balakrishnan, chief of pediatric otolaryngology, highlighted the program's role in advancing pediatric care. Dr. Erin Grantham, a pediatric urologist, has refined robotic-assisted techniques for urinary tract anomalies, enabling complex procedures on infants as young as four months old.
Furthermore, Dr. Grantham leads a training program to educate future surgeons on robotic technology. This allows experienced surgeons to guide and teach junior colleagues in real-time during operations. Dr. Janey Pratt, a pediatric surgeon, noted that the robot provides precise instrument control and visualization, resulting in more delicate procedures and simpler recovery.
Initially focused on urological, gynecological, and bariatric surgeries, the program plans to incorporate additional procedures throughout the year. This expansion solidifies the hospital's position as a leading center for pediatric robotic surgery.
