Starbucks Corporation's "Pink Bearista"-inspired glass cold cup, priced at $32.95, led to rapid sell-outs shortly after its July 2026 release. A limit of two cups per customer did not deter demand, with the items appearing almost immediately on resale markets at heightened prices.

For the 2025 holiday season, Starbucks released a similar bear-shaped glass cup that also sold out almost immediately, with resale prices climbing into the hundreds. CEO Brian Niccol, during the company's Q1 2026 earnings investor call, referred to the original "Bearista" cup, launched in November 2025, as a "lucky strike."

Niccol's comment implied that such product successes may appear coincidental, but the true business lesson lies in understanding demand versus need. Companies that can strategically create products that evoke "want" rather than simply fulfilling basic necessities can achieve significant commercial success.
