Starbucks invests over $1 billion to restore cafe experience
Under CEO Brian Niccol, Starbucks is committing more than $1 billion to reconfigure stores, aiming to shift focus from speed-oriented efficiency back to a traditional, welcoming atmosphere.

Starbucks is pivoting away from its recent focus on high-speed mobile ordering and streamlined service by launching a $1.2 billion renovation strategy. Known as "Back to Starbucks," the initiative aims to transform its locations back into comfortable environments for customers to spend time, reversing a trend that saw the removal of thousands of seats in recent years.
The investment involves updating over 8,000 stores to feature warmer lighting, plants, and upholstered seating, with 1,000 locations already completed. The company plans to add 25,000 seats to its U.S. footprint by the end of the fiscal year, explicitly countering previous efforts that discouraged lingering by removing furniture and restricting electrical access.
In addition to the renovations, Starbucks is testing new store designs that utilize smaller footprints but retain the brand's traditional aesthetic. This strategy acknowledges that even customers seeking convenience prefer environments that feel welcoming rather than purely transactional, highlighting a fundamental shift in the company's approach to retail operations.
