Starbucks leverages seasonal scarcity to drive transaction growth
Starbucks’ strategy of using limited-edition products and holiday-themed promotions has become a key driver for consumer traffic and record-setting sales.

Starbucks continues to utilize a strategy of planned scarcity, deploying seasonal items like the Black Cat Frappuccino and “Bearista” glassware to incentivize customer visits. This approach has forced competitors such as Dunkin’ and Panera to mirror the model, introducing their own seasonal cup campaigns to compete for market share during the final quarter of the year.
The commercial effectiveness of this strategy was highlighted by record-setting traffic in late 2025, which saw the company’s holiday launch day become its largest sales day in North American history. Data from the period showed significant increases in both physical store traffic and overall engagement with branded seasonal goods.
Financially, the company reported $7.3 billion in North American revenue for the quarter ending December 28, 2025, a three percent year-over-year increase. Comparable transactions rose by three percent, while the average ticket size grew by one percent, demonstrating that the seasonal strategy remains a functional component of Starbucks' broader retail performance.
