StarCraft Returns in 2030 as Open-World Shooter

Blizzard Entertainment announced at BlizzCon today that the StarCraft franchise will return in 2030 with a new title. Breaking from the series' established real-time strategy roots, the upcoming game will be an open-world shooter.
Dan Hay, a VP at Blizzard, revealed the project and showed a cinematic trailer during the event. This genre shift marks a significant departure for the long-running science fiction series, which began with top-down strategy gameplay.
The company previously attempted to enter the 3D shooter genre with StarCraft: Ghost, which entered development in 2002 but was ultimately canceled in 2014 after years in development hell. The new StarCraft aims to bring the universe to players in a new format.
Details regarding the game's specific mechanics and narrative are expected to be released as development progresses towards its 2030 launch.
