Starfield Lead Designer: Sequel Unlikely

Emil Pagliarulo, former lead system designer for Starfield, believes a sequel is unlikely. He cited insufficient success and unrealized potential as key reasons why a continuation of the game is improbable.

Emil Pagliarulo, who served as the lead system designer for Bethesda's space exploration game Starfield, has expressed skepticism regarding the likelihood of a sequel. In comments reported by VGC, Pagliarulo stated he would be "very surprised" if Starfield 2 were to be developed, suggesting the first game's success was not enough to warrant a continuation.

Pagliarulo acknowledged the outcome as regrettable, feeling that Starfield did not fully realize its initial design ambitions. He suggested that a sequel, informed by the lessons learned during the development of the first game, could have potentially come closer to director Todd Howard's original vision.

Citing the outpost building mechanic as an example, Pagliarulo explained that the system ultimately did not integrate well into the game's narrative, missing an opportunity for greater impact. He also indicated that fully realizing the game's original scope would have required a significantly larger development team than was available.

The former lead designer further elaborated that many mechanics incorporated into Starfield, such as those borrowed from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, were new to the team. This led to delays as core systems needed to be established before content could be built around them, compressing the timeline for content creation.
