Starfield Player-Made Mod Enhances Spacecraft Landing Experience

A player-created mod for Starfield enables seamless spacecraft landings through the atmosphere with real-time calculations. The modification addresses issues found in previous solutions.

Player Frederik Wessberg Is A Nerd has developed a modification that improves the graphical experience in the open-world space exploration game Starfield. This mod removes the game's original design of animated transitions for spacecraft takeoffs and landings, replacing them with seamless, real-time calculated descents.

The new modification simulates a spacecraft's flight through the atmosphere and its landing on a planet's surface entirely in real-time. It utilizes the game's internal data regarding planetary atmospheres and surface topography. During descent, the spacecraft experiences atmospheric friction effects, including fire, and players can freely adjust the camera angle.

This mod resolves issues encountered in prior attempts, such as graphical errors and flickering, which stemmed from merely blending textures. As the spacecraft approaches the planet's surface, terrain details gradually appear, enhancing realism and reducing visual distortion.

Wessberg expressed surprise at the detailed data Bethesda Studio included within the game for the spacecraft landing system. He considers this data to be elements of a "true" space simulator but regrets that it was not fully showcased through the game's original design.

The mod is currently in its adjustment phase but is slated for a free release on Nexus Mods. It offers Starfield players a new, more immersive way to experience spacecraft landings.
