Starship Technologies delivery robot causes accident in Tallinn
A Starship Technologies autonomous delivery robot ran a red light in Tallinn, leading to a bus emergency stop that left nine people injured.
A serious traffic accident occurred in Tallinn on October 26 when an autonomous delivery robot operated by Starship Technologies ran a red light. The maneuver forced a public bus to brake suddenly, resulting in injuries to nine passengers. Footage from the bus's onboard cameras confirmed the robot's role in the incident.
Starship Technologies attributed the crash to technical difficulties. COO Pepe Aaviksoo stated that poor lighting conditions, combined with a bright advertising board behind the traffic signal, interfered with the robot's sensor perception. He admitted that the device's light sensors failed to function as intended during the encounter.
The company has denied allegations that the robot fled the scene. Aaviksoo explained that the unit remained at the location for roughly ten minutes while support staff remotely directed it to clear the road. The incident highlights ongoing safety challenges for L4 autonomous delivery vehicles operating in complex urban environments.
