START Institute Calls for Active Threat Training for School Bus Drivers

The S.T.A.R.T. Institute is calling for specialized training for school bus drivers in recognizing and responding to active threats, highlighting a critical gap in school transportation safety. This initiative aims to enhance student protection during daily commutes.

The push for training comes after a series of alarming incidents nationwide, including a parent boarding a bus in California and an armed woman attempting to enter a bus in Indianapolis. The institute argues that while schools have invested heavily in on-campus security, bus drivers often lack the specific preparedness needed for such threats.

The institute's comprehensive training program, spanning eight hours, combines classroom instruction with practical, scenario-based exercises. It equips drivers with skills to identify potential threats, assess response options, and act decisively when seconds count, emphasizing their role as first responders.

So far, over 10,000 school bus professionals across 18 states have completed the S.T.A.R.T. training. The organization encourages school districts to adopt these preparedness measures, reinforcing the vital role school bus drivers play in ensuring the safety and security of students.
