Startup Funding Hits Record High Driven by AI Boom

Global venture funding for startups reached a record $510 billion in the first half of 2026, surpassing the total investment of $440 billion for all of 2025. Data from Crunchbase indicates a significant increase in both acquisitions and IPOs during the second quarter.

The artificial intelligence boom was a key driver of this funding surge. OpenAI and Anthropic alone accounted for $217 billion, representing 43% of all startup funding in the first half. This highlights the influence of a small number of AI companies on venture capital markets.

Significant investments were also made in AI infrastructure, defense technology, robotics, and healthcare. The second quarter was the second-strongest on record for funding volumes, with investors pouring $205 billion into over 5,000 startups.

The first half of 2026 has set a new benchmark for global startups. While a substantial portion of capital was concentrated in a few major AI firms, other funding stages and the mergers and acquisitions market also demonstrated strength.
