Startup Investors Active in August: Y Combinator Leads, Nvidia Accelerates

August proved to be another active month for startup funding, with familiar names dominating investor rankings. Y Combinator, the accelerator, maintained its position as the most active backer of U.S.-based startups based on the number of deals.

Chip manufacturer Nvidia notably accelerated its investment activities, participating in nine disclosed rounds of at least $5 million. This marked its busiest month for investing and contributed to a total of $1.3 billion in led or co-led financings. This surge highlights Nvidia's growing role as a financial supporter within the startup ecosystem, particularly in AI.

Globally, venture funding reached $42 billion in August, a 122% increase year-over-year. Seven companies raised rounds exceeding $1 billion during the month.

Other leading investors included General Catalyst, which led or co-led five rounds of $5 million or more. Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and S3 Ventures tied for second with four lead or co-lead deals each. Nvidia's increased activity underscores the growing prominence of corporate investors, especially those with stakes in the AI sector.
