Steam Overhauls Gifting System with New Features
Valve's Steam platform has significantly updated its gifting system, allowing users to send games and gift cards more easily. Key features include guest checkout and automatic regional price calculation for gifts.

Valve, the company behind the digital game distribution platform Steam, has announced a substantial update to its gifting system. The overhaul introduces several new features aimed at simplifying the process of gifting games and digital gift cards to others.
A core enhancement is the expansion of the "guest checkout" functionality. Previously limited to digital gift cards and Steam hardware, users can now purchase any game as a gift without needing a Steam account. This allows for purchases via shared links or direct email delivery. Unclaimed gifts will be automatically refunded after 30 days, and gift recipients must be in the same country as the purchaser.
Another significant addition addresses cross-regional gifting. Users can now send games to friends located in different regional pricing tiers. Steam will automatically calculate the correct purchase price based on the recipient's regional pricing during checkout, removing the need for the giver to manually check prices in different storefronts. This feature requires the recipient to be on the giver's friends list.
Further improvements have been made to Steam's wishlist features, complementing the gifting updates. Users can now purchase games directly from others' wishlists, even if they are not friends. Customizable wishlist sharing links are also available, which can pre-fill recipient information for streamlined gifting. These updates build upon recent improvements to wishlist categorization and sharing, collectively lowering the barrier for users to share games with friends and family.
