The Steam gaming platform is facing a significant problem with a proliferation of cloned games, many of which are rapidly produced using artificial intelligence. This trend is making it difficult for players to find original independent titles.

According to reports, a "find-the-object" game called "Needle in a Haystack Simulator" gained viral popularity in August, with its trailer exceeding 50 million views on X. However, this success attracted developers who quickly released numerous similar games before the original was even launched.

These copycat titles, including "A Needle in a Haystack," "CO-OP Needle Hunt: A Needle in a Haystack Challenge," and "Story of The Needle in a Haystack," often feature logos and promotional materials that show clear signs of AI generation. This indicates a deliberate use of AI to rapidly clone popular concepts.

The developer of the original "Needle in a Haystack Simulator" has stated that the influx of cloned games is severely impacting their title's discoverability. They have resorted to adding prominent red labels to their game's promotional art to distinguish it as the "original" work.

As the number of games on Steam continues to grow, concerns are rising about the potential for further increases in such copycat content. There are calls for Valve, the platform's operator, to implement systems for identifying and mitigating these cloned games to protect the creative efforts of developers.
