Automaker Stellantis has filed a patent for a novel system designed to detach an electric vehicle's high-voltage battery pack in cases of overheating or other thermal anomalies. This mechanism aims to enhance safety by enabling the rapid separation of a potentially hazardous battery unit from the vehicle.

The patent describes a system capable of severing both the electrical and mechanical connections between the battery pack and the rest of the vehicle. Once detached, the vehicle can reportedly continue to operate using its 12V auxiliary battery, allowing it to move a safe distance away from the compromised battery.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office published the application, which details multiple release switch locations. These switches could be positioned both inside and outside the vehicle, such as in the trunk, allowing for external activation, potentially by emergency responders.

Stellantis, a global automaker with brands including Fiat, Chrysler, and Peugeot, is exploring various technologies to improve electric vehicle safety. This battery detachment system represents one approach to mitigating risks associated with high-voltage EV batteries.
