Stena RoRo orders new generation E-Flexer vessels
Stena RoRo has ordered two E-Flexer 2.0 RoPax vessels from CMI Weihai in China, designed for future battery-only operation.
Gothenburg, Sweden – Stena RoRo has placed an order for two E-Flexer 2.0 RoPax vessels with China Merchants Shipbuilding Industry (CMI) Weihai in China, with an option for two additional vessels. These new vessels are designed to be capable of future operation solely on battery power.
The two ferries are scheduled to enter service on Stena Line's route between Gothenburg and Frederikshavn, Denmark, in 2030. The E-Flexer series, which now comprises 17 vessels, is known for its flexibility and cost efficiency. The new 2.0 generation will feature a diesel-electric propulsion system prepared for up to 85 MWh of battery capacity.
This order also marks a decade of cooperation between Stena RoRo and CMI Weihai. During this period, a total of 21 vessels have been ordered from the shipyard, including 13 previous E-Flexer RoPax vessels. The partnership has been characterized by technological advancement and reliable delivery.
The new vessels will measure 214 meters in length and have capacity for 1,400 passengers and 2,720 lane meters of freight. Their design, with provisions for battery operation, underscores the company's commitment to developing more sustainable shipping solutions.
