Stolpen Castle Receives Letters from Countess von Cosel

Stolpen Castle has acquired five historical handwritten letters penned by Countess Anna Constantia von Cosel during her nearly 50-year imprisonment at the site. The letters, received as a private donation, offer insights into her life in exile, detailing concerns about debts and inheritance issues.

Castle director Uli Kretschmar described the find as a "small sensation" and expressed gratitude to the donor. Countess von Cosel, a prominent figure in Saxon history, was a favorite of Augustus the Strong before being exiled to Stolpen Castle for political reasons in 1716, where she remained for almost five decades.

Following their receipt in July, the authenticity of the letters has been verified. They will now be made available to the public, with special care taken due to the fragile nature of the paper. The letters will be exhibited at the castle during Saxony's autumn school holidays, from October 9 to 25.

The exhibition provides visitors a rare opportunity to delve into Countess von Cosel's personal life and experiences during her confinement. Stolpen Castle, located in Stolpen near Dresden, is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is 8 euros for adults.
